Tonsillitis In Dogs:Causes, Treatment, and Related Symptoms

Overview
Tonsillitis usually refers to inflammation of the palatine tonsils. The patient usually presented with bilateral tonsil enlargement. But occasionally foreign bodies can be seen, such as leaves of grass, wood, or grass seeds stuck in the tonsillar crypt causing unilateral enlargement. Tonsillar carcinoma is usually unilateral.

Causes of Tonsillitis In Dogs

The cause is unknown. "Secondary tonsillitis is secondary to diseases that can cause chronic vomiting, retching, coughing, or reflux, such as macroesophagus, pyloric spasm, or stomach tumors."
 

Tonsillitis In Dogs Symptoms

Dogs with primary tonsillitis present with cough, mouth opening, retching or vomiting of white foamy mucus, listlessness, elevated body temperature and lack of appetite.
The symptoms of secondary tonsillitis are similar to those of primary tonsillitis, and are also accompanied by various symptoms of the primary disease.
 

Diagnostic criteria for Tonsillitis In Dogs

The diagnosis can be confirmed by biopsy of the tonsils.
 

Tonsillitis In Dogs Treatment

Treatment of primary tonsillitis is usually ineffective. Any predisposing factors should be taken seriously and treated. Antibiotics, steroid hormones, and antitussive agents should be carefully selected for symptomatic treatment. In addition, tonsillectomy is of little help because symptoms persist after removal of the tonsils.
Secondary tonsillitis should be treated with symptomatic treatment.
