Periodontal Disease In Dogs:Causes, Treatment, and Related Symptoms

Dog Medicine
Overview
Canine periodontitis is an acute or chronic inflammatory process involving the periodontium, namely gingival margin, periodontal pocket, periodontal ligament, and alveolar bone. If left untreated, inflammation progresses further and causes gingival and alveolar bone recession, which in turn leads to gingival atrophy, resorption of alveolar bone, and tooth loosening. In addition, gingival tissue damage and tooth alignment disorder, low calcium diet or oral bacteria in the process of the disease invade the gingiva, destroy the root membrane tissue are easy to cause the disease.

Causes of Periodontal Disease In Dogs

"Periodontal disease caused by bacterial activity, with plaques and stones adhering to the tooth surface, causing soft tissue inflammation along the gingival margin due to mechanical irritation from plaques and stones and release of toxic products from the bacteria."

Periodontitis Symptoms

Symptoms are halitosis, drooling, red, swollen, soft, atrophic gums, exposed roots, loose teeth, and purulent secretions visible at the gums or extrusion of the gums. Radiogram showed localized osteolysis in the alveolar, indicating an apical abscess.

Diagnostic criteria for Periodontal Disease In Dogs

Radiogram showed localized osteolysis in the alveolar, indicating an apical abscess.

Periodontal Treatment

Dental plaque, stones and food debris were removed under anesthesia. Attention should be paid to the removal of dental plaque and calculus on the root surface below the tooth margin (i.e., in the peridental pocket). Polish all tooth surfaces as much as possible to prevent reaccumulation and adhesion of spots and stones. Remove the loose tooth. For refractory periodontitis, the relevant teeth should be extracted. If the gingiva is hypertrophic, electrical cautery can be used to remove excess tissue. Iodine glycerin was applied after operation. Systemic use of antibiotics, vitamin B complex, niacin, etc.

Methods of prevention and control
Regular oral and dental examinations and regular cleaning of tartar with gauze are required. Solid food was fed. Give large bones or large bite glue etc. to exercise teeth and gums.
