Dog Medicine
Overview
Otitis media in dogs refers to the inflammatory lesions in all or part of the middle ear canal, including the Eustachian tube, tympanic cavity, tympanic sinus and mastoid air cell.

Causes of Otitis Media in Dogs

There are many causes of otitis media in dogs, such as food allergies, allergic diseases, allergies caused by fleas, and most commonly, water in the ear when bathing.

Symptoms Of Otitis Media in Dogs

The general symptoms of otitis media are similar to otitis externa, with head shaking, ear pain, deafness, ear leakage and perforation of the eardrum. Otitis media may spread to the inner ear and cause otitis media, presenting nystagmus and dyskinesia. The affected dog often remains below the affected ear, rotates toward the affected side and falls on the affected side, unable to stand up. In severe cases, the inflammation involves the facial and parasympathetic nerves, causing facial paralysis, dry conjunctivitis and dry nasal mucosa. Inflammation attacks the meninges and causes meningitis, or cerebellar abscess and death.

The diagnosis can be made on the basis of neurological examination and symptoms of otitis media.
