Dog Medicine
Overview
Auricular hematoma is a hematoma formed by the rupture of a large blood vessel in the ear and blood flow between the ear cartilage and the skin. It often occurs on the inner surface of the auricle, but also on the outside or both sides of the auricle.

Causes of Dog Ear Hematoma

1, mechanical injury: such as the compression of the ear shell, contusion, scratch, bite and so on can lead to ear hematoma.
2, ear diseases: such as external auditory canal inflammation caused by ear itching, animals shaking their heads and ears can also damage blood vessels.
3. Infestation of ticks.

Main Symptoms Of Dog Ear Hematoma

The main manifestations were rapid swelling of the inner ear, usually starting from the base of the ear, gradually developing to the middle of the ear, and in severe cases involving the whole ear. The initial palpation of the disease was elastic and undulating, and then the palpation was warm and painful, with firm surrounding and soft in the middle. After hematoma formation, the auricle was significantly thickened and sagging, and there was a sensation of fluctuation and a painful response to pressing. When swelling obstructs the auditory canal, it can cause hearing impairment.

Diagnostic criteria for Dog Ear Hematoma

The diagnosis can be made on the basis of obvious swelling of the auricle and outflow of blood-colored fluid by puncture. The main components of the blood-colored fluid were auricular vein blood, lymph, and tissue fragments.

Treatment of Dog Ear Hematoma

Small hematomas can heal themselves.
Large hematomas should be treated with a cold compress and a collection of compression bandages to stop bleeding. And it is not suitable for premature surgery, and surgery can be performed after the swelling has formed for a few days or the swelling no longer increases significantly.
