Exophthalmos in Dogs:Causes, Treatment, and Related Symptoms

Overview
The eyeball was pulled out of the orbit by external force. This case was more common in Pekin dogs, Shih Tzu and dogs with large eyeballs.

Exophthalmos Causes

It is mainly caused by fighting between dogs or other external factors that cause eye damage.
 

Main symptoms of Exophthalmos in Dogs

Suddenly the entire eyeball is out of the orbit and cannot return. The affected dog was painful and uneasy, with a high degree of discomfort. Some eyeballs were injured due to trauma or scratching. The eyes with a long time of prolapse, dry cornea, hairy and other dirt on the cornea, and slow or no reflection of the pupil. Severe corneal atrophy, necrosis, or perforation may be seen.
 

Diagnostic criteria of Exophthalmos in Dogs

After a dog fight, some or most of the eyeball is out of the orbit, the eye hemorrhages, some eye muscles are broken, the optic nerve may be damaged, and the degree of eye swelling varies.
 

Treatment Methods of Exophthalmos in Dogs

(1) Under general anesthesia, reconstruction was performed immediately. The eyeball was rinsed first. The dirt on the eyeball was rinsed thoroughly with 3% boric acid water or mixed normal saline, and finally rinsed with normal saline mixed with antibiotics. The upper and lower eyelids were lifted with towel forceps, and the eyeball was gently pressed into the orbit with wet sterilized gauze. Tetracycline eye ointment was applied to the eyeball. In order to prevent further prolapse of the eyeball, 2-3 stitches can be sutured in the upper and lower eyelid nodules.

(2) To eliminate inflammation, subcutaneous sealing therapy was performed on the upper and lower eyelids once a day for 3-5 days.

(3) Enucleation should be performed for necrotic eyeball.
