Entropion in dogs:Causes, Treatment, and Related Symptoms

Dog Medicine
Overview
Entropion is mainly caused by developmental defects, spastic entropion and other causes in dogs, which can be treated with medication to relieve mild entropion, and severe entropion can be changed by surgery.

Causes of Entropion in dogs

1. Developmental defect entropion

It is related to breed and heredity, but the exact heredity is not clear. Shar-pi, Chow Chow, Saint Bernard, Labrador, Great Dane, small lady dog and other breeds are prone to occur. Facial and ocular configuration may be a pathogenic genetic defect. It is generally considered to be a simple dominant inheritance, and the mode of inheritance is difficult to determine. Generally, the two eyes are affected, and the degree of inversion is different. For example, the Great Dane lacks sufficient support for the eyelids due to its large and deep orbit, which in turn can cause entropion.

2. Spastic entropion

Conjunctivitis, foreign body, dry corneal conjunctivitis, trichiasis, double ciliary, eyelashes easy to grow and corneal ulcer and other secondary orbicularis muscle spasm and entropion. Trigeminal neuralgia can cause blepharospasm and entropion. Eyelid trauma or inflammation causes its fiber degeneration, resulting in eyelid deformation and entropion. It often occurs on one eyelid and can occur in dogs of any age.

3. Acquired entropion

The eyelid is entropion due to loss of orbital fat or muscle atrophy. It can also occur in aged dogs with loss of muscle tone.

Main symptoms of Entropion in dogs

One or both sides of the varus, some of the upper and lower eyelids are varus, if the situation is not serious, the eyelashes or skin by the cat is only gently touched the eyeball surface, showing a slight no, tears. In severe cases, it is difficult to open the eyes, and there will be pain, face spasms, and then serious conjunctivitis and keratitis.

Diagnostic criteria of Entropion in dogs

It was mainly based on clinical symptoms and medical history.

Treatment for Entropion in dogs

1. Developmental defect entropion

Most cases can be corrected by surgery. However, surgery is generally ideal at 4-6 months of age or when facial features are mature. Shar-pei dogs can be treated with temporary eyelid suture at 3 weeks of age to prevent severe keratopathy. Permanent surgical correction is shown.

2. Spastic entropion

Most of the causes were eliminated, and the varus was improved. In order to reduce the stimulation of the eyeball, soft contact lenses can be placed or temporary eyelid suture can be done, and the suture can be removed after 2-3 weeks. If there is no effect, an eyelid entropion plasty should be performed.

3. Acquired entropion

According to the degree of varus correction, surgical correction was performed. The lateral canthus fixation is generally used to reduce the palpebral fissure to correct entropion. An equal-sized flap was cut into the upper and lower eyelids of the lateral canthus. The upper eyelid flap was removed, the lower eyelid flap was retained, and it was sutured to the eyelid skin defect.

4. Postoperative care

There was mild ectropion of the eyelids in the first few days after surgery due to swelling. Antibiotic eye ointment or eye drops were applied to the affected eye 3-4 times a day. Be sure to wear an Elizabethan circle around the neck to prevent damage to the diseased eye. Stitches were removed 10-14 days after surgery
