The tailless rat in Sichuan is the Sichuan short-tailed shrew. The Sichuan short-tailed shrew is also known as the ground roller, smelly rat and mountain rat. In Sichuan, except for the northwest Sichuan Plateau, it is widely distributed around and within the basin. The Sichuan Short-tailed Shrew weighs 90g, has a body length of 96mm, and a tail length of 12mm. There are fine ocher spots on both cheeks, the back is dark gray or black brown, the ventral surface is light gray, slightly stained light yellow, the back of the four legs is gray black, and the fingers (toes) and claws are all white. Tail black brown. The snout is blunt and short, the eyes are degenerated, about the size of a rapeseed, and the ear shells are missing. The body hair is thick and long; the tail is very short, scaly, naked and hairless, and sometimes has micro hairs at the tip. The front claws are short, blunt, slightly thick, and suitable for digging.
The Sichuan short-tailed shrew is widely distributed around and within the basin in Sichuan except for the northwest Sichuan Plateau. It inhabits indoors, farmland, shrubs and other environments at an altitude of 300 to 2500m. It is omnivorous and can reproduce all year round, with 3 to 7 offspring per litter. Life under camp and above ground.
