Blue tangs usually breed at dusk or night. At this time, the male will swim to the female and slap her side with his head in a flirting manner, and then swim to the grid plate to lay eggs. The eggs adhere to the grid plate, forming an egg nest.
Small larvae will hatch in about 24 to 48 hours. Then a large number of them went offshore to forage. The sexual maturity stage of this fish is not judged by age but by size. Male fish generally enter the mature stage when they are 11 centimeters in length, while female fish need to grow to about 13 centimeters. As a release spawning fish, the parents do not provide parental care to the young.
