Causes of ascites in dogs

There are many causes of ascites in dogs, such as ascites caused by liver cirrhosis, ascites caused by cardiopulmonary problems, ascites caused by low protein, etc. Sick dogs usually show symptoms such as abdominal enlargement, sunken back and waist, loss of appetite, and body weight loss. If the owner has discovered that the dog has ascites, it is recommended to take the dog to the pet hospital immediately to have the ascites extracted, and at the same time check the cause of the ascites, and then take corresponding treatment measures.

1. Ascites caused by liver cirrhosis

This is the most common cause of ascites in dogs, which is often referred to as hepatic ascites. Generally, this situation is due to difficulty in the backflow of the dog's blood and lymph fluid, causing water to leak out of the blood vessel walls, causing ascites. At this time, it is generally difficult to cure. What can be done is to protect the liver and promote gallbladder, eliminate ascites, and relieve symptoms. The rest mainly depends on the dog itself.

2. Ascites caused by cardiopulmonary problems

This condition is generally caused by cardiopulmonary reasons, such as heart valve disease, heartworm disease, chronic emphysema, and pericardium. Water, tumors, interstitial pneumonia, etc. These diseases can cause heart failure in dogs. Increased capillary pressure increases tissue fluid, causing water in the dog's blood to seep into the abdominal cavity and tissues throughout the body. Timely medical attention is required.

3. Ascites caused by low protein

When a dog lacks protein, there is nothing in the blood that can help retain water, so it will be drawn from blood vessels and other spaces in the body. For example, abdominal leakage can lead to ascites. If it is low-protein ascites, you can reduce recurrence by improving your diet. Just feed some high-protein foods and canine protein powder to supplement nutrition.
