Why does Garfield always cry?

Pet Knowledge
This article is provided by Veterinarian Dr. Sarah Davis
The reason why Garfield cats always shed tears is mainly related to their congenital genes. Since Garfield cats' noses are relatively short, their lower eyelids are closer to the cornea, causing tears. These tears are usually serous eye secretions. In addition to congenital factors, foreign body stimulation, inverted eyelashes, internal heat caused by improper diet, nasal congestion and other reasons can also cause cats to always shed tears. If you find that Garfield cats have reddish-brown secretions or purulent secretions, you must observe the cat’s condition. Check whether the conjunctiva is red and swollen, and whether there are other respiratory symptoms. This is abnormal eye secretion, and it is recommended to seek medical attention immediately.

1. Problems with congenital genes

Garfield cats often shed tears because of their short nasal passages. However, these tears are usually serous eye secretions. The owner only needs to help the cat frequently. Just clean up the tears.

2. Foreign body irritation

If dust, hair, pollen and other foreign bodies accidentally enter Garfield’s eyes, the foreign bodies will irritate the eyes and cause the cat to shed tears. It is recommended that the owner carefully check the cat's eyes to see if there is any foreign matter. If so, rinse with saline and then take out the foreign matter that has entered the eye. If it is not flushed out, it is recommended to take the cat to the pet hospital for further treatment in time. After removing the foreign body, avoid scratching the cat's eyes to avoid secondary eye damage.

3. Inverted eyelashes

If Garfield cats suffer from inverted eyelashes, the growth of eyelashes will irritate the eyes, which will cause the cat to shed tears all the time. It is recommended that the owner carefully observe the growth of the cat's eyelashes. If the cat has inverted eyelashes, it is recommended to take the cat to the pet hospital to remove the inverted eyelashes or undergo surgical treatment.

4. Improper diet leads to internal heat

If the owner feeds the cat salty or dry food for a long time, and the cat does not like to drink water, it will be very serious. It can easily lead to internal heat, causing the cat's eyes to secrete a large amount of tears and eye feces, and over time, thick tear stains will form. At this time, the owner needs to replenish the cat's water in time, feed it some light and easy-to-digest food, add some vegetables appropriately when feeding, or give the cat some fire-reducing drugs such as honeysuckle or isatis root, and pay special attention to try not to give the cat some fire-reducing medicine at this time. Cats drink milk and eat too many meat products.

5. Cat nasal branch

If Garfield cat suffers from feline nasal branch, there will be a lot of eye secretionsSymptoms such as sneezing, coughing, runny nose, depression, decreased appetite, gradual weight loss, and upper and lower eyelid adhesions may also occur. Because the symptoms are somewhat similar to those of a cold, pet owners must pay attention to distinguish them. During treatment, it is generally necessary to use a cotton swab moistened with physiological saline to gently wipe the foreign matter around the eyes, and then instill anti-inflammatory eye drops, and at the same time, take antiviral drugs, lysine and other drugs for treatment. In addition, the environment where cats live needs to be disinfected and kept clean and tidy.
