Cat coughs are mainly divided into pathological causes and non-pathological causes. Pathological causes are coughs caused by diseases, such as asthma, pneumonia, feline nasal congestion, etc. Non-pathological causes mainly include eating too fast, foreign bodies in the throat, odor irritation, etc. If you find that your cat is coughing, it is recommended that you go to the pet hospital for examination in time. You need to first find out the cause of the cat's cough and then treat it.

1. Pathological causes

1. Asthma

When cats have asthma, they usually show symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest tightness, coughing, etc. Severe cases can cause asthma in a short period of time. Dyspnea and hypoxemia develop. When the cat becomes ill, the owner needs to place the cat in a location with good air circulation and not shake the cat's body in a hurry to avoid suffocation. After the cat gets better, the owner needs to take the cat to the pet hospital for examination and treatment in time.

2. Pneumonia

There are many causes of cat pneumonia. According to the pathogen, it can be divided into foreign body pneumonia, bacterial pneumonia and mycoplasma infectious pneumonia. The main clinical manifestations are influenza. There will be respiratory murmurs in the form of nasal discharge, cough, and auscultation of the lungs. In severe cases, dyspnea, accelerated heart rate, conjunctival hypoxia, and cyanosis may occur. The main treatment is to use some antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, cough and asthma drugs. As long as the cat seeks medical treatment in time, there is more than 90% chance of being cured.

3. Nasal bronchitis in cats

Nasal bronchitis in cats is caused by cats being infected with the herpes virus. It is usually spread through contact or secretions, especially in cats that have not been vaccinated. More susceptible to infection. Cats infected with rhinophyma felis mainly show symptoms of the upper respiratory tract, such as sneezing, runny nose, cough, increased tears, etc., which are often easily confused with a common cold. Therefore, when a cat shows such symptoms, it is recommended to take it to the pet hospital for examination in time.

2. Non-pathological reasons

1. Eating too fast

Cats may eat more quickly when they see food they like, and the food may irritate the throat. It will cause coughing. In this case, it is recommended that the owner stop feeding the cat first and let it relieve itself for a while, and it will usually improve significantly.

2. There is a foreign body in the throat

If the cat coughs less frequently, such as coughing occasionally, then it is generally considered that the foreign body is suddenly inhaled in the throat, and it will also be accompanied by retching. this situationIt is necessary to open the cat's throat immediately to see if the foreign body can be removed. If necessary, take it to the pet hospital for removal in time to avoid suffocation.

3. Odor irritation

Cats will also cough when they are irritated by odors, such as air fresheners, dust, and strong perfume. At this time, the cat needs to be moved to a ventilated and open place, and it can recover after resting for a period of time.
