Why do puppies’ ears droop?

Pet Knowledge
This article is provided by Veterinarian Dr. Matthew Thompson
There are several main reasons why puppies have droopy ears: First, breed reasons, such as Beagles, Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers, Teddy Dogs, etc. are common lop-eared dogs. Second, if you are too young and your ears are not fully erect, they will naturally erect when the time comes. Third, if you are in a bad mood, are in a state of tension or fear, your ears will droop. Fourth, calcium deficiency. When a dog is deficient in calcium, it will cause skeletal dysplasia, which will also affect the development of ear cartilage, causing the ears to droop.

1. Breeds

Some dog breeds have droopy ears. Their ears are folded downward and close to the head. Common breeds include: Cocker Spaniel and Migru Harrier. , Basset Hound, Rottweiler, Beagle, Golden Retriever, Labrador, Teddy, Bedlington, Pekingese, Shih Tzu, Dachshund, Afghan Dog, Poodle, etc. So first of all, you need to determine whether the dog’s breed is erect or lop-eared.

2. Too young

If the dog is under 6 months old, the droopy ears may be because he is too young, which is normal. Because a dog’s ears are not completely erect at birth, but require a period of growth and development before they can be fully erect. When the dog's ears are not shaped, the dog's ears will hang down and stand up many times, but usually they will return to the normal standard state when they are shaped again, so don't worry too much.

3. In a bad mood

When a dog is scolded by his owner, he will be in a bad mood and become unhappy, which will cause his ears to become deaf. Secondly, dogs may also droop their ears when they are frightened, nervous, or scared. At this time, the owner needs to comfort the dog more to ease the dog's nervousness, or let the dog rest alone in a quiet and ventilated environment until the dog's mood stabilizes.

4. Calcium deficiency

Dogs are easily deficient in calcium during puppyhood. The early symptoms of calcium deficiency are mainly unsteady walking, trembling walking, and droopy ears. As the calcium deficiency worsens, abnormal skeletal development will gradually appear, such as O-shaped legs, arched back, and S-shaped spine. This is collectively called rickets. Therefore, once a dog is found to be suffering from calcium deficiency, it is recommended to provide calcium supplements in a timely manner. Liquid calcium is available on the market, which is absorbed quickly and has good effects., you can also take your dog to get some sunshine to help absorb calcium.
