Why can’t dogs eat salt?

The reason why dogs cannot eat salt is mainly related to their physiological structure and health needs. The main component of salt is sodium chloride, which is an essential condiment for humans, but not for dogs. Eating salt may cause skin diseases, increase the burden on the kidneys, and increase the burden on the heart, so it is not recommended for dogs to eat salt in their daily life.

1. Skin diseases:

The skin and hair of dogs may also be affected by excessive salt. Too much salt can cause your dog’s skin to become dry, itchy, and even cause skin diseases. At the same time, the dog's hair will also become rough and dull, affecting its appearance.

2. Increase the burden on the kidneys:

The kidneys and urinary system of dogs are relatively fragile and cannot handle excess salt as effectively as humans. When dogs consume too much salt, the kidneys will bear extra burden, which may lead to impaired kidney function and even kidney disease in the long run. In addition, too much salt will increase the dog's water intake, thereby increasing the burden on the urinary system, which may cause problems such as frequent urination and urgency.

3. Increase the burden on the heart:

Salt also poses a threat to the heart health of dogs. Excessive salt will increase the level of sodium ions in the dog's body, causing blood pressure to rise and increasing the burden on the heart. Over the long term, dogs can develop serious illnesses such as high blood pressure and heart disease.

In order to ensure the health of dogs, breeders should avoid giving dogs food high in salt. In your dog’s daily diet, you should choose low-salt or salt-free dog food and avoid adding any condiments. At the same time, breeders should also pay attention to the dog's water intake, food intake, mental state and urination. Once any abnormalities are found, they should seek medical treatment and seek veterinary advice in time.
