What's going on with the big swelling on my dog's butt?

A large swelling in the dog's butt may be caused by anal gland inflammation, perineal hernia, mosquito bites, etc. First of all, if the dog's anal glands are not cleaned for a long time, they may become inflamed and swollen over time, and the accumulated anal gland fluid needs to be squeezed out in time. Secondly, if the swollen part of the dog feels soft to the touch and can be pushed back when pushed in, it is likely to be a common perineal hernia in dogs, which usually requires surgical repair. Finally, if the swollen bumps on your dog are relatively hard and there are no other abnormalities, it is most likely caused by mosquito or parasite bites, which will usually disappear in a day or two.

1. Anal gland inflammation

It is generally recommended to squeeze the dog’s anal glands once every half month to a month. If the dog’s anal glands are not squeezed for a long time, it will cause anal gland inflammation. There are swellings and bulges. At the same time, the dog will frequently lick the anal area and rub the anus on the ground. In this regard, owners should pay attention to observation. Once they find that their dog has anal discomfort, such as rubbing its butt against the ground or other objects, they need to immediately check whether the dog's anal glands are blocked and help the dog clean it up.

2. Perineal hernia

If the dog’s buttocks is swollen and accompanied by symptoms such as difficulty defecation or diarrhea, it is likely to be caused by perineal hernia. The owner can try to touch the swollen area. If it is soft and can be pushed back, the swelling is likely to be a common perineal hernia in dogs, which usually requires surgical repair. If surgery is not performed in time, the bladder may fall into the hernia hole and cause urinary tract obstruction, which may cause kidney failure.

3. Mosquito or parasite bites

If the dog’s butt is bitten by mosquitoes or parasites, it will also swell up. In this case, the owner can apply some anti-inflammatory ointment to the dog, and at the same time regularly deworm the dog to prevent parasite bites. As long as the dog does not have other abnormalities, it will usually disappear in a day or two.
