This article is provided by Veterinarian Dr. Olivia Johnson
Male cats suffering from urethritis will have symptoms such as frequent urination, redness and swelling around the urethral opening, difficulty urinating, linear and cloudy urine, as well as the presence of blood and pus. Severe symptoms may cause difficulty urinating, causing the cat to suffer from anuria, hyperkalemia, and abnormal heart pulsation function. The treatment of cat urethritis should be based on the cause of urethritis. For example, cystitis, stones, polyps and other problems may cause urethritis. Symptomatic medication or surgical intervention is required according to the cause. Generally, bladder mucosa is used. Protective agents, anti-inflammatory drugs, urinary tract prescription foods, etc. You can also eat cranberries on weekdays for prevention.

1. Initial symptoms

In the early stage of urethritis in male cats, symptoms such as frequent urination, irritability, and frequent defecation in the litter box will appear. If the cat is found to frequently enter and leave the litter box, it is most likely to be suffering from urethritis. If you have urethritis, you must pay attention to it.

2. Mid-term symptoms

In the mid-term, the cat’s spirit and appetite will also be affected, with symptoms of listlessness, decreased appetite, and peeing everywhere. At the same time, due to pain, the cat will howl in pain when urinating and lick the urethral opening frequently.

3. Later symptoms

In the later stages of urethritis, cats will also have systemic symptoms such as vomiting and elevated body temperature. This also shows that cat urethritis is very serious, causing anuria, long-term inability to discharge urine normally, accumulation of toxins in the body, causing nephrotoxicity, resulting in systemic symptoms such as vomiting and elevated body temperature. If it has reached this stage, it is recommended that the owner take the cat to the pet hospital for examination and treatment immediately to avoid delaying the condition and increasing the cat’s pain.
