Pet Knowledge
This article is provided by Veterinarian Dr. Sarah Davis
When a puppy sleeps with his eyes rolled, there are generally two phenomena. The first is that the puppy will roll its eyes or twitch its mouth while sleeping, and sometimes bark. These are normal phenomena. It may be that the puppy is dreaming, an instinctive reaction caused by conditioned reflexes. The second is to distinguish it from the late stage of canine distemper in puppies. In the late stage of canine distemper, puppies will have symptoms of eye rolling and twitching whether they are sleeping or awake. Therefore, if the puppy rolls its eyes even when it is not sleeping, it may be sick and needs to go to the pet hospital for diagnosis and treatment in time.

1. Normal phenomenon

Normally, when a dog sleeps, his eyelids will shake before falling asleep, but will stop shaking after he falls asleep. This will cause the dog to roll his eyes while sleeping. For dogs, this is to block light and is a biological instinct. Just like when a person is asleep, if you gently open his eyelids, you will see that his eyes are white. Only sleeping people or animals can do this.

2. Causes of disease

Of course, there may also be other abnormalities when a puppy rolls his eyes. For example, if a dog suffers from eye disease, it may roll its eyes abnormally while sleeping. Or it may have been infected with parvovirus or canine distemper. These diseases may cause the dog to roll his eyes and sleep.

3. Precautions

Owners need to note that normal dogs will not have other abnormal symptoms when they roll their eyes, but dogs that roll their eyes because of illness will also have some other symptoms. symptoms, such as runny nose, convulsions, tears from the corners of the eyes, abnormal secretions from the corners of the eyes, etc. If you find any of these abnormalities in your dog, you must pay attention and take your dog to the pet hospital for examination and treatment immediately.
