How to feed a newborn puppy

Pet Knowledge
This article is provided by Veterinarian Dr. Emma Watson
It is recommended that newborn puppies be breastfed. Breast milk contains maternal antibodies, which can improve the puppy's immunity. If there is no breast milk or the female dog does not feed, then artificial feeding is needed. Feed the puppy goat milk powder specially designed for pets. Use a bottle to brew it and feed it every 3 hours. Don't feed too quickly to avoid choking the dog. In addition, you should also pay attention to keeping the puppy warm, put as many warm mats as possible in the place where it sleeps, and use cotton swabs to stimulate the puppy's urethra and anus to help the puppy excrete.

1. Breastfeeding

1. If the mother dog has sufficient milk, it is best to breastfeed the newborn puppy, because the nutritional content of breast milk is relatively comprehensive for puppies, and it contains Maternally derived antibodies, so puppies fed breast milk will have stronger resistance.

2. First of all, the owner can place the puppy on the nipple of the mother dog and let it suck the milk. Under normal circumstances, the puppy will drink milk on its own as long as it finds the nipple. The owner only needs to pay attention to whether the puppies can get milk and whether the mother dog will press on the puppies while sleeping.

2. Artificial feeding

1. If the female dog has no breast milk or cannot take care of the puppies, then the newborn puppies need to be fed by the owner themselves. It is recommended to purchase pets from regular channels. Specially formulated hypoallergenic goat milk powder.

2. Since newborn puppies don’t eat much, just feed about 2ml each time. Generally, feeding is required every 2-3 hours, and feeding is also required at night to prevent the puppy from hypoglycemia and shock. After 15 days of feeding, the feeding amount can be appropriately increased and the feeding time can be extended.

3. When brewing goat milk powder, you need to use warm water of 30-40℃, and try to feed your puppy freshly brewed goat milk powder.

3. Keep warm

Because the body temperature system of a newborn puppy is not perfect enough and its resistance is relatively weak, the owner also needs to pay attention to keeping the puppy warm to avoid colds. In addition, because newborn puppies are not yet able to defecate on their own, the owner needs to moisten a cotton swab with warm water and gently wipe around the puppy's anus to stimulate the dog to expel feces.
