How to artificially feed kittens

Pet Knowledge
This article is provided by Veterinarian Dr. Emma Watson
Kittens need artificial feeding in terms of diet, defecation, and warmth. First of all, in terms of diet, kittens need to be fed goat milk powder specially designed for pets. The specific feeding amount can be given according to the goat milk powder feeding instructions. Secondly, in terms of defecation, because newborn kittens are not yet able to defecate on their own, the owner needs to soak a cotton swab in warm water and then gently wipe the anus area to stimulate the kitten to defecate. Finally, in terms of keeping warm, because the body temperature control system of newborn kittens is not yet perfect, owners need to use blankets, electric heaters, etc. to help keep the kittens warm.

1. Feed special goat milk powder for pets

1. When artificially feeding kittens, you first need to choose hypoallergenic pet goat milk powder, prepare small bottles, and then use warm milk to feed kittens. Boil the milk powder with water. When feeding a kitten, do not let it raise its head to prevent food from accidentally entering the trachea and lungs, and do not move too violently. Squeeze the milk slowly and carefully observe the kitten's swallowing movements.

2. In addition, some kittens may not use pet bottles. It is recommended to use a syringe to feed kittens. The specific method of use is to first use a syringe to extract an appropriate amount of pet goat's milk, and then inject it drop by drop through the corner of the kitten's mouth. After the kitten swallows, continue injecting. Do not inject continuously to prevent the milk from entering the lungs and causing foreign body pneumonia. Wait for serious situations.

3. Generally, it is recommended that kittens that are more than ten days old should be fed 2-3 ml each time and fed once every 2 to 3 hours. As the kitten grows older, you can gradually increase the amount of milk each time, but you need to observe the kitten's condition. If symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea are caused, it is recommended to reduce the amount of milk fed. It is recommended to dilute the milk powder for the first feeding, and then increase the concentration after the kitten adapts.

2. Artificial stimulation of defecation

1. After feeding, the owner needs to artificially stimulate the kitten to defecate. First, moisten a cotton swab with warm water, and then gently wipe the kitten's anus to encourage defecation.

2. Artificial defecation for kittens is generally done once a day. Since the kittens are drinking milk during this period, there is relatively less feces. As kittens age, generally by 15 days of age, it is recommended that owners stimulate defecation twice a day to prevent feces from accumulating in the kittens' intestines and causing constipation.

3. Take measures to keep warm

Because kittens cannot regulate their own body temperature yet.And the resistance is relatively weak, so the owner must take measures to keep the kitten warm, prepare a clean and warm nest for the kitten, and keep the indoor temperature at about 25°C to prevent diseases caused by cold. At the same time, you need to pay attention to the body temperature of the kitten, which is generally 38-39°C. If the body temperature is too low, you need to prepare a blanket and a hot water bottle to keep it warm.
