It is best to dock the tail of a puppy within 3-7 days after birth, because the dog at this period is not fully developed and the nerves in the tail are not abundant, so there will be no obvious pain. When the dog grows up and the nerves in the tail have grown well, and then the tail docking operation is performed, the operation will become more difficult and the dog's pain will also be greatly increased. In addition, different breeds also have different tail docking times. Dogs that usually require tail docking include Corgi, Teddy, Schnauzer, VIP, etc.

1. When to dock the tail of a Corgi?

Generally, the tail of a Corgi is docked within one week of birth. At this stage, the pain-sensing nerves in the tail of the Corgi are underdeveloped and the coccyx is not fully developed. Tail docking can alleviate the problem. Corgi's pain, and can reduce the psychological damage caused by tail docking to Corgi. You can use a rubber band to wrap around 1 cm from the base of the Corgi's tail. You can wrap it tighter. Generally, the Corgi's tail will fall off on its own in 2-3 days.

As the Corgi's age gradually increases, it becomes more difficult to do tail docking. In addition to increasing the pain and bleeding of Corgi's tail docking, it may also lead to tail infection. It is better to choose surgical tail docking. .

2. When should a Teddy’s tail be docked?

It is best to dock the Teddy’s tail within 1 to 7 days after birth, because the nerves in the Teddy’s tail are not yet mature at this time. For Teddy, the pain is not that obvious, and the severed tissue will fall off naturally after docking the tail without bleeding. The owner can choose a suitable distance and tie that part tightly with a small rubber band or rope. After about a week, the tail that is tied tightly at the end will become necrotic due to insufficient blood supply, and it will fall off automatically.

As the dog grows up, the nerves in its tail also develop, and the pain of tail docking surgery will increase. If the best time is missed and the dog has grown up, surgery can be performed to dock the tail.

3. When should a Schnauzer’s tail be docked?

A Schnauzer’s tail can be docked one to two days after birth. Since the dog’s tail bones were not yet mature at that time, the time for tail docking was more appropriate. The most common tail docking method now is to tie a rope at the junction of the tail bone where the dog's tail length needs to be reserved, and let the dog's tail slowly fall off on its own after it becomes necrotic. Because puppies are just born and have little sense of pain, this method is not very painful for the dog and is more convenient for the owner.

4. When will VIP’s tail be docked?

It is best to go to the pet hospital to see a professional for tail docking about a week after the dog is born. Generally, hemostasis and suturing after surgical cutting are used. The operation process is faster and the risk of infection is small. It is recommended not to cut it directly at home or tighten it with rubber bands to cause necrosis and fall off. The risk of infection is relatively high, and the surgical effect cannot be guaranteed.
