Acute Gastric Distention And Torsion In Dogs:Causes, Treatment, and Related Symptoms

Dog Medicine
Overview
Acute gastric distention and torsion is a sudden, severe and fatal gastrointestinal disease in which the stomach is filled with food and fluid, especially gas, including swallowed air and gas produced by food fermentation or both, resulting in rapid expansion of the stomach and can develop into torsion. This is due to the distended force action that forces the dog's distended stomach to rotate to the right or left side, usually the left side, along an axis at right angles to the esophageal and pyloric sphincter junctions.

Causes of Acute Gastritis

The pathogenesis of acute gastric dilatation in dogs is complicated and related to many factors. "Improper feeding methods (e.g., drinking plenty of water after feeding), lack of proper exercise, and poor exercise patterns (e.g., suddenly sitting up, jumping, turning, etc.) are secondary to certain infectious diseases that cause severe diarrhea, metabolic disorders, and genetic and mechanical effects."

Acute Gastritis Symptoms

Dogs with acute gastric dilatation initially presented with belching and exhaust, moderate intermittent abdominal pain, and then abdominal distension rapidly, which soon became persistent severe abdominal pain. The dogs were howling and restless, and had a lot of drooping, retching and vomiting. Abdominal distension may be unilateral or bilateral, and it is evident in the former abdomen. If pneumatosis is predominant, drumming sounds are present on percussion; if accumulation of food or effusion is predominant, dullness sounds are present on percussion. The diseased dog can see mucous membrane flushing or dark red, irregular heartbeat, increased pulse, rapid breathing, intestinal sounds disappeared, most of the diseased dogs can hear a short gastric peristalsis sound, when the stomach content is derived, this sound will gradually weaken or disappear. In the later stage of the disease, the dog showed the clinical features of hypovolemic and hypotensive shock.

Diagnostic criteria For Acute Gastritis

The initial diagnosis of gastric dilatation and torsion syndrome was made based on the history, clinical symptoms, and clinical and X-ray examination.

Acute Gastritis Treatment

1. Gastric tube decompression: the gastric tube is inserted into the stomach through the mouth to discharge the gas and liquid in the stomach and reduce the pressure in the stomach.
2, drug emetic: early treatment with 3% hydrogen peroxide 50~100ml or repeated method of emetic, can avoid the risk caused by later surgery.
3. Surgical treatment.
